Japanese Auctions
Wow, that’s big!
Japanese auctions are the main source of imported vehicles
for the Australian market with around 70,000 cars auctioned per week.
Some small auctions will sell 500 cars a week while others sell up
to 12,000 cars in one day! These auctions are sometimes the best
place to find a bargain, however we need to inspect and bid on many
vehicles to land that great deal.
Japanese auctions basically work the same way as any auction, buyers
bid on a vehicle and the highest bid above the reserve price wins.
This process at an auction selling 10,000 cars in one day is mind
boggling to say the least. Manual bidders actually bid from terminals
within the auction combined with computer bids which are placed prior
to the auction from people who cannot attend. The only way to turn
over such a large numbers of vehicles is to use huge viewing monitors
with multiple channels of vehicles being sold at the same time. Bids
are placed as rapidly as one second apart and if the bidding stalls
for just a few seconds the virtual hammer is struck……sold!
The larger auction houses have Sauna’s and café’s
to cater for people who have to spend the entire day (sometimes till
midnight) bidding on vehicles. Exporting vehicles is a big business
with over XXXXXXX cars per year being exported from Japan most of
which are bought from these auctions.
How the auction system affects you
Auctions provide a huge variety of vehicles and reliable condition reports.
The only real problem with buying from auctions is that there is only a short
consideration period. Most auction lists are only available to view the day
before the auction and some cases only the same day. Decisions have to be
made quickly and the condition reports and small photo’s are sometimes
the only information we have to set our bid limit.
The advantages of buying from auctions are:
- Cheap vehicles available
- A huge variety of vehicles
- Reliable inspection reports
- Reliable odometer readings

The disadvantages of buying from auctions are:
- Fast response required
- Limited pictures available
- Cannot request extra information
