Compliance for Cars Built Pre-1989
Until 2005, there was an exemption known as the '15 year
rule' which allowed vehicles aged 15 years or more to be imported
without the need for full compliance - they just had to be
roadworthy.
In February 2005 the laws were changed to apply only to vehicles
built before 1989. The new laws are also somewhat more stringent,
requiring vehicles to meet Australian Design Regulations before
they can be licensed. The modifications required can be completed
by non-RAW’s workshops but the work will still need
to be signed off by a RAW or a certified engineer.
Compliance Modifications
Some of the typical modifications
required are:
- Fitting rear retractable seat belts
- Installing ULP restrictor
- Emissions testing
- Conformity of lighting devices
- Child Restraint Anchorage points
- Flat side mirror
- Noise testing
- Side intrusion bars
- DOT or E marked tyres
